Soft Pastel
It's important for the portrait to capture the soul and personality of YOUR pet.
I don't want to produce a painting that could be someone else's pet of the same breed.
I like to get to know your pet's personality and see their features in person—to feel their fur and look into their face and see what you see. I know that sometimes this isn't possible, and in those cases I ask for several photos and a list of adjectives and funny nicknames (we all have them!) you've given your pet.
Pencil Sketch
I start with a full size pencil sketch, working from reference photos to find the best composition and to practice capturing your pet's features without the complication of color. I focus on shapes, perspective, and value.
Color Study
After we finalize a composition you are happy with, I'll do a half size study in color. This color study allows me to practice capturing features using a selected color palette. I ask for your approval before continuing to the final painting. The color studies are not highly detailed, and are meant to convey the overall look of the final piece.
Adjustments
Sometimes I will take a photo of the sketch, and make adjustments on my iPad using Procreate to quickly test out ideas and requested changes.
Final Painting
Once I start the final painting, I keep in touch with updates as I progress. It's a fun and collaborative process.
I primarily do pet portraits as commissions, but I've taken on other subjects as well. If you have questions or would like to learn more, please email me at katelynnobrienart@gmail.com! I would love to hear from you and find out if my style of painting is the right fit for you!
